I have installed the Display Suite module in Drupal 8 and whilst it appears in the Extend List the check-boxes are disabled and I am unable to enable them. Any ideas why?

Display suite like most extension modules haa an info list which is found by clicking on the dark gray triangle so it points down. You'll see it requires the Layout Plugin. Install the Layout Plugin and you will be able to enable Display Suite. Each item gives you information when you click the dark gray triangle on the same line as its check box.
