The D8 port notice points to this issue as "being included in core" but I'm having trouble verifying that... and the more popular entry in the project issues list shows work-in-progress, so not sure what the state of this is?

I would be cautious about doing so; the basic port is well established and tested, but the maintainer is inactive so although the community have identified issues and created patches, they have not been committed. Look at its issue queue ...
