Problem/Motivation

#1867518: Leverage entityDisplay to provide fast rendering for fields added the following piece of code:

        foreach ($field_names as $field_name) {
+          if ($entity->hasField($field_name)) {
+            foreach ($entity->get($field_name) as $item) {
+              $item->_attributes = array();
+            }
+          }
+        }
 $this->fieldOutput[$entity->id()] = $displays[$bundle]->build($entity, $bundle_fields[$bundle]);

It should better not have to do that.

Proposed resolution

Add _attributes in $display->build directly

Remaining tasks

That's a bit distant now, but it might be that we put it there so that $item->_attributes are initialized before we call hook_entity_prepare_view() - see rdf_entity_prepare_view()

We might want to re-check the discussion and patch from #1778122: Enable modules to inject attributes into field formatters, so that RDF attributes get output

This is no longer added by #1867518: Leverage entityDisplay to provide fast rendering for fields, but the problem remains.

A user of a module I maintain is reporting that this is an issue for him: #2939741: Installing Monster Menus on Drupal 8 causes InvalidArgumentException

It looks as though rdf_entity_prepare_view() is expecting _attributes to be set, and if it is not that causes an error:

function rdf_entity_prepare_view($entity_type, array $entities, array $displays) {
  // Iterate over the RDF mappings for each entity and prepare the RDFa
  // attributes to be added inside field formatters.
  foreach ($entities as $entity) {
    $mapping = rdf_get_mapping($entity_type, $entity->bundle());
    // Only prepare the RDFa attributes for the fields which are configured to
    // be displayed.
    foreach ($displays[$entity->bundle()]->getComponents() as $name => $options) {
      $field_mapping = $mapping->getPreparedFieldMapping($name);
      if ($field_mapping) {
        foreach ($entity->get($name) as $item) {
          $item->_attributes += rdf_rdfa_attributes($field_mapping, $item->toArray());
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

I propose that rdf_entity_prepare_view() should initialize _attributes if it is unset. See my patch.

@Gribnif
Thank you for your patch! I'm curious, did you do some investigation figuring out why _attributes wasn't set in your case?

gribnif’s picture

@dawehner: No, unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the specific problem the other user is reporting in the ticket I referenced. However, I can definitely see that it *could* be a problem, based on this ticket. So that is why I made the patch.

Version: 8.6.x-dev » 8.8.x-dev

I can definitely reproduce the problem now, but I can't see exactly why $item->_attributes is unset. However, there are numerous places in the code with lines like this, from core/modules/link/src/Plugin/Field/FieldFormatter/LinkSeparateFormatter.php:

      if (!empty($item->_attributes)) {
        // Set our RDFa attributes on the <a> element that is being built.
        $url->setOption('attributes', $item->_attributes);

        // Unset field item attributes since they have been included in the
        // formatter output and should not be rendered in the field template.
        unset($item->_attributes);
      }

which unset _attributes. Therefore, I think it prudent to just do the initialization, as outlined in #9.

Version: 10.1.x-dev » 11.x-dev

Drupal core is moving towards using a “main” branch. As an interim step, a new 11.x branch has been opened, as Drupal.org infrastructure cannot currently fully support a branch named main. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted for the 11.x branch, which currently accepts only minor-version allowed changes. For more information, see the Drupal core minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal core release cycle.

Version: 11.x-dev » main

Drupal core is now using the main branch as the primary development branch. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted to the main branch.
