Mailchimp timed out requests slow down entire site. [#2365143]

Problem/Motivation

An error occurred requesting list information from Mailchimp. "MailChimp API
call to lists/list failed: request timed out: "

An error occurred requesting memberinfo for info@example.com in list
432ce9999. "MailChimp API call to class="placeholder">lists/member-info failed: request timed out: "

Proposed resolution

Not sure yet what the solution is but maybe setting a retry and dumping the request into a queue for later?

Like on google mail for example "Attempting to reconnect in 5secs" then keep multiplying that until the request can be completed?
Just a guess...

I believe I've just witnessed this issue myself.

We had a large amount of downtime this morning on a site with a large amount of traffic. The logs were referring to "Akamai", and since we din't use that as a CDN it flagged MailChimp up (along with other log messages).

Weirdly we've been using this for over a year (currently on 3.3) with no issues, it was only seeing the MC status page today that there was a lot of issues with their servers.

Is this a major issue, but not treated as a priority due to the uptime of MC's servers?

We're going to be ending support for the 7.x-3.x branch due to the upcoming deprecation of the v2.0 MailChimp API. The latest module release uses the new MailChimp API and may no longer have this issue. If you're still seeing a problem with the most recent release, please feel free to reopen for the 7.x-4.x branch.
