Describe the problem you have found and a link to the page with a problem:
https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0 and the related pages appear to have no mention of accessibility. As webmaster for a government website, I need an overview of improvements in accessibility over Drupal 7, e.g., can I now make Alternate text a required field?

While I was able to find https://drupal.org/node/2004876, that was at too technical a level and there is only one item. It is not in language suitable to show to non-technical staff. I'm looking for something at the executive summary level similar to the content that exists in the https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0 now.

Lack of this information gives the impression that accessibility improvements are considered less important than other new features.

Posts like http://www.accessiq.org/news/news/2014/05/drupal-8-to-focus-on-accessibi... or http://opensource.com/business/14/5/new-release-drupal-8-accessibility-a... show that this is high on the list.
I agree that this should be much more prominent (i.e. findable). This is bona fide Assoc responsibility if I am not mistaken.

@Charles Belov - Thanks for pointing that out. It's an important point.

@LeeHunter - Appreciate moving it to the right project so it can be more quickly updated.

@dddave - Agreed. There's also this post here which seems to indicate it's one of the reasons that the Australian government is going to Drupal according to:
http://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/drupal-australian-open-source-145375

I'm wondering if we should just propose something. We're really just talking about a title, a teaser sentence & a paragraph for the Features page https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0

Here's a start in any case:

Now Even More Accessible

Drupal is now more accessible than ever with more semantic HTML and is providing better support for a broader range of users. Learn more.

We've added extensive support for WAI-ARIA and have been working to provide more semantic HTML5. With the ARIA Live Announcements API and TabManager we are providing centralized control for rich Internet applications. Many small improvements have been made in color contrast, and font sizes. We are now leveraging jQuery UI's autocomplete and modal dialogs. Views is now in Core, and is both the output and Views UI is now much more accessible.

For more information - https://groups.drupal.org/node/420413 - I'll publish #2 tomorrow in the next day or two.

I'd like to see improvements for content and site maintainers broken out from improvements for public-facing content. Something like (please move things if I've misplaced them):

Drupal is now more accessible than ever with more semantic HTML and is providing better support for a broader range of users. Learn more.

Improvements for site and content maintainers include: Many small improvements have been made in color contrast, and font sizes. We are now leveraging jQuery UI's autocomplete and modal dialogs. Views is now in Core, and is both the output and Views UI is now much more accessible.

Improvements for website visitors include: Site managers can require all images to have alternate text entered.

And all will benefit from: extensive support for WAI-ARIA and more-semantic HTML5. With the ARIA Live Announcements API and TabManager we are providing centralized control for rich Internet applications.

(Perhaps these suggested changes belong on https://groups.drupal.org/node/420413 in order to keep https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0 brief. In that case, I'd suggest not assuming the reader is familiar with the jargon. Something like:)

Now Even More Accessible

Drupal is now more accessible than ever with more semantic HTML and is providing better support for a broader range of users, both site creators and site visitors. Learn more.

We've added extensive support for standard accessibility technologies including WAI-ARIA and have been working to provide more semantic HTML5.

@Charles Belov, thank you for bringing this up (and for breaking out benefits by audience, that's very helpful!). Agree this is important and a key benefit. I will take the action to get this information included on the /drupal-8.0 pages.

Thanks for pointing this out, guys. We've adjusted the Drupal 8 main, features, and site builder pages to include your suggested text about accessibility. As we grow the section in the future we will make sure we include information about the great accessibility features that D8 is packing.

Very nice. I'd still like to see specific mention in https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0/features#accessibility of allowing admins better enforcement of alt text, e.g., "Site administrators can now require entry of alternative text for images."

Also a minor typo in https://drupal.org/drupal-8.0/features#accessibility

"Views is now in Core, and is both the output and Views UI is now much more accessible."
would better read
"Views is now in Core; both the output and Views UI are now much more accessible."

Hi Charles,

I've made the requested changes. Thanks for your patience!

Are there any other modifications you or Mike feel are necessary?

charles belov’s picture

Looks great.

Minor typos on https://www.drupal.org/drupal-8.0/features#accessibility

"Drupal 8 has added extensive support for standard accessibility technologies including WAI-ARIA and have been working to provide more semantic HTML5."
would that be
"Drupal 8 has added extensive support for standard accessibility technologies including WAI-ARIA and we have been working to provide more semantic HTML5."
except that I don't think you use "we" or other Drupal team references anywhere else. Maybe:
"Drupal 8 has added extensive support for standard accessibility technologies including WAI-ARIA. HTML5 will be more semantic."

"Many small improvements have been made in color contrast, and font sizes, and the system will leverage jQuery UI's autocomplete and modal dialogs."
would be
"Many small improvements have been made in color contrast and font sizes, and the system will leverage jQuery UI's autocomplete and modal dialogs."
or
"Many small improvements have been made in color contrast and font sizes. The system will leverage jQuery UI's autocomplete and modal dialogs."

Referencing #2163209: Add alternate text to file icon as another small improvement, though it's not committed yet.

I like it so far! It sounds impressive without being long-winded.

Since WYSIWYG-in-core is an oft-touted selling point of D8, is it worth mentioning in the a11y section?

Setting this issue to Fixed since the page referenced now has a paragraph about accessibility. Please reopen this issue if it is still needed.
