I am trying to install drupal via ms Web matrix. Everything is fine until it gets to the configure site bit. After selecting the button on this screen I just get an error 500. I can't find the problem here at all.

I assume this means you are working on a local Windows PC? You probably have a permissions problem. Running Drupal on Windows is OK but not ideal. Debugging Drupal alone is bad enough wih Anyway if you download Acquia Dev Desktop, and stop Web Matrix running. your Drupal site will work on a local Windows PS without problems.
If you prefer to do battle with Windows and getting it working, you should try to find server error logs on Web matrix. The answer to the issue will probably be there.

I had the same problem, after installing the url rewrite 2.0 module (from within webmatrix) it works.
