I want to use Drupal to build a website-for-a-good-cause that will hopefully help many people out of poverty. It'll be a niche website that is very similar to www.kickstarter.com in D7. But I'm totally confused as to which modules to use in terms of easy and user-friendly pledges/donations/payment processing???

This is the basic idea:
It's going to be a local micro-financing website. For example, Tom is a poor farmer in a remote country and he wants to start a small dairy production business so as to help feed his family. He needs to raise $5,000 so as to purchase the cows, build a shed, buy the necessary bottling equipment, etc.

Tom comes to Example.com and registers. He creates a Project node where he describes his business idea and how he will use the money and states that he needs to raise $5,000 over the next 2 months so as to start his small business.

Mr Goodheart is an average middle-class dude who like to give to charity every now and then. He comes to example.com fills in his card details in his profile settings, and then finds Tom's project and decides to pledge $250 to Tom's business idea. Mr Niceman also contributes $400. And so forth.

For a nice UI, each Project page will also display a little "thermometer" showing how much of the goal amount has been raised.

If $5,000 worth of pledges are raised in 2 months time, then the payments will go out of the financiers' accounts on the day when the $5,000 goal is met. If the goal is not met, then Tom gets nothing and no money goes out of the Mr Goodheart's and Mr Niceman's accounts. (Although, if this feature is too hard to achieve, I'll stick to usual immediate donations, so that the money does go out immediately).

The website Example.com will charge a small fee of 0.5%, so as to cover its own administrative costs.

The raised money will go out of the credit/debit cards of the financiers (Mr Goodheart and Mr Niceman) and once the 0.5% have been deducted, the money will go to Tom (or maybe to Example.com's account first and then to Tom's account). (I have no clue how this is going to work. Please help or advise!)

Which modules should I use?
I have watched this screencast http://drupaldojo.com/session/drupals-payment-api-and-how-we-built-kicks... but it's for Drupal 6. In drupal 7 there seems to be also Drupal Commerce, but it creates Products and Product Types and separate nodes. Another question is which module should I use to "Pay the node", i.e. make a pledge or a payment to a given project node? I also don't see how I can use it for such a Pledge or Donation site. Any advice?

And what about using modules like Donate and Pay

Also, the whole idea rests on "DIRECTNESS" - the idea that you contribute and that money goes directly to that person. i.e. that there are no shady "charities" in-between who will mismanage or appropriate portions of the funds. So, how can I make the money to go out directly from one person to another? Or, if that's not possible, the how can I make it so that the money goes out of the account of of the financiers and is automatically paid into Tom's bank account in his country.

Needless to say, the less money is lost on payment processing, the better. For example, paying PayPal something like 4% for each transaction is really too expensive. So what advice about alternative and reliable services would you give?

Any advice is appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

This is a really well written post, however, that doesn't change the fact that no one can describe how to build kickstarter in a forum thread. You've already found the only two screencasts I know of (the one you linked above, and the one ryan linked in your commerce module issue).

your best be is to just dive in and start-- then ask more specific questions as you encounter them. good luck.
