Sorry to ask such a basic, stupid question, but here goes:

When the documentation says, "After downloading the Drupal package, start by extracting the archive to the PHP working folder (The folder that you specified for your documents in the php.ini file)", does this mean the directory where php.ini is (C:/Windows for my Win95 system), the directory specified by doc_root in php.ini, or the directory where php itself resides?

Thanks for the help.

you sure are better of following the generic installation procedure.

drupal moderators: i would suggest just dropping the Installing Drupal on Windows. there is no real difference to the generic instructions, and it must be maintained ...

you might be right but i´ve got some problems to understand http://drupal.org/node.php?id=260, especially all those $ signs. i wonder what they can be, i suppose it´s how you start commands in linux (?)

the '$'s indicate the linux command prompt.

in that case, i shall suggest that the guys who write the documentation, if they decide to get rid of "Installing Drupal on Windows", add some warnings about what should be ignored by windows users (if you are right and there's no real difference between the generic instructions and the instructions for windows). i hope this contributes to improve the manuals :)

that´s good also because windows users are forced to familiarised, even if to a short extent, with some linux features

It should go in the directory you serve your web pages from (and where you can run php scripts in). Possibly C:/Apache/htdocs on an unmodified Windows install of Apache.

hello there!

this is a bit confusing for me. i got the same problem as bradklafehn. after reading your postings i don´t know whether the PHP WORKING FOLDER is:

-the directory where php.ini is, that is, APACHE (and not C:/Windows as in the case of bradklafehn)
-APACHE\BIN, as there`s no HTDOCS in my APACHE folder (the one anonymous recommends)
-www (ie, my localhost), as it´s the one in my view fits best anonymous' description: "the directory you serve your web pages from"

my directory tree might help (i don´t know it is different among differnet plafforms):

c:\archivos de programa\easyphp1-7\apache\bin
.........................................\conf
.........................................\icons
.........................................\logs
.........................................\modules
.........................................\users
.........................................php.ini
.........................................(other files)
..................................\home
..................................\mysql
..................................\php
..................................\phpmyadmin
..................................\tmp
..................................\www
..................................(other files)

any ideas? any improvements since january?

thank you very much for your help (i hope you can help me) and patience

i forgot to say that doc_toot (in my php.ini) equals nothing, that is
doc_root =
