I have tried this too, I think the problem is where ghosted forwarding is used on a domain. Find the picture you want to link to, right click it and choose properties, and then copy the address from the window that pops up there. This will show you the REAL URL of the image you require.
You may have HTML filtering turned on
If you have HTML filtering turned on and don't have the < img > tag specified as an allowed tag, your image won't show.
Change this in Admin --> System --> Filters

You can find filters in the new version under Administer->Input formats. There you can configure each filter.
