From what I've seen in the archives it's been available for awhile -maybe a year, but I just discovered and implemented the htmlArea module. This is a great module for anyone who wants to support non-tech types authoring Drupal nodes/pages. The module gives the "body" or text input area of content/node creation pages a 'MSword-type" formatting bar which can be used to format the users contribution.

I recently installed htmlArea on two production 4.4rc sites and I think the end users are going to be very happy they don't have to deal with html tags which are tough for most people to use. Like going back to one of those early word processing programs where you had to "ctrl - XYZ..." all your formatting.

htmlArea also enables me to create better looking nodes with images because I can use the 'table' function within htmlArea to better format the way the node looks with images, columns, etc. All possible before but more laborious via tag coding. I'm still fine tuning the preferences and there are some 'speed bumps' in the preference plug-ins, but I think htmlArea is well worth using to make life easier for end users.

Note: According to my tests, Macintosh users with Safari and Panther won't be able to use the htmlArea editing area, nor will Mac users with IE5. Good news is that it works with Mozilla's FireFox running on Panther.

Thanks for the tip gatezone. Did you have to do anything special to get enable images manipulation via the module?

My Drupal ID works.

and now i've turned it off. good module for non-web coding types, but it's much easier for me to do it by hand.

anyone been using htmlarea for a while?

Sorry, I hand type all my HTML tags and use an offline tool for some really complex tag structures (I use odd ones that HTMLArea doesn't have, nor will it any time soon, but I'm OK with that).

what are the disadvantages if any?

It doesn't work on Safari on Mac (or at least according to another thread around here, it doesn't). Need javascript, something I usually have off, though do turn it on from time to time to try out things like this.

has anyone thought about or tried making this available from the comment module?

See above, it works for comments there, not sure if that's the default behavior in 4.4rc/CVS/HEAD or if it's a hack.

These guys. Check out this.
