I am completely new to drupal api. I have some basic Knowledge of php and I have been using it to devlop dynamic web sites.
I also have some basics on drupal. I just want some one to help me with the basics for extending drupal using drupal api

What is it you want to do? I recommend understanding if Drupal can do what you want first (without coding).

I want extend the functionality of a drupal site so that i can add features that are not ealier own envisaged.
