I've read that clean URL instructions page in the handbook and to be honst I’m dazzled, maybe it was because of information overload, or maybe because I felt it sounded complicated and not know what to do as it said things such WARNING this and WARNING that and be careful here and there, etc...

Help me, where do I start? I would like clean URLs, what do I have to do step-by-step, to achieve it?

Do I have to install something? No idea what to do.

Thanks for helping a newbie in advance!

goto administer -> settings

expand general settings

scroll down to clean urls. at the bottom of clean urls is a few sentences where there is a link to test whether clean urls will work on the server you are on. Click this link.

if the test is successful, enable clean urls and save configuration.

I ran the test and it did not go to error page as it said it would if my server was not configured, so does that mean thats it! I have Clean URL I don't have to do anything?

EDITE: I just enabled clean URLs and I don't feel anything new. I clicked on a content page and created a test page and it should say the title of the page right? but it still says node/2....?!?

Clean URLs just means your URL is like www.site.com/node/1 rather than www.site.com/index.php?q=node/1. If you want to create path aliases (change 'node/1' to a meaningful url), you need to enable the "path" module and give yourself access control to create and/or administer url aliases. Then when you edit the node, there's a fieldset labeled "Url Path Settings", where you can type in a meaningful path.

In the module>Path>check box, right?

Is this what you meant?

But the description for that it says "Allows users to rename URLs."

Who is ‘user? Me, the admin? Or does that mean any users are going to have some sort of control?

The "user" in this case refers to you or any user you have given access rights to, which will allow them to take over this role.

If you would like the process to be done automatically, you can download the Path Auto module.

Hey, thanks for the explanation.

I think I would like the “Path Auto Module” where do I download it, and how complicated is it to implement?

The current method is manual labor, that means every time I add page/story/links or anything I have to add it manually to that list.

Will this “Path Auto Module” be automatic such as how wordpress for example is? once you name the title, the title becomes the url?

Please guide me where I can download/and instructions on its instillation.

Yes. Once you install it, go to admin/settings/pathauto and in the Node path settings, choose the placeholders you want (such as [title] etc)) for the paths for each node type (story, page) you are using and you are all set.

Where do I go to install it? I'm just told I need to install this but don't even know where this auto thing is?

I'm assuming I have to download a file to install it, but where is it to download?

Hmm...it is an additional module. You can find it at www.drupal.org/project/Modules

I know it’s there somewhere but where? There's 100s of modules there. What's the exact name so I can do a keyword search for it in the browser so I could get to it.

What is it called, because searching for keyword “Path Auto” says it doesn’t exist.

Try searching this page http://www.drupal.org/project/Modules for pathauto (no space). It's all in alphabetical order anyway.....

The modules page is alphabetical and quite logically laid out.
