In an intranet site I am building, the admin/modules page recently lost the module list (there is only a 'Save configuration' button under the grey line). I have experienced this problem the second time already (the first time, I click the Save button and lost all the settings.)
The strange thing is that the same site installed on another server does not give this problem at all. Therefore it appears to be related to a specific server. My server is running XAMPP php5.05, apache 2.
I read in the forum some previous posts reporting similar problems. I increased the memory_limit, both in index.php and in .htaccess file, as suggested but the problem persists.
I wonder if someone who has solved similar problems can provide some hints as to how to solve the problem.
Thank you

out of memory problem
Well,I can only say I experience the same problem. Fixing the memory limit did work for me. I used http://drupal.org/node/29786 as a lead to the solution.
I can't give you more than this.
Thanks!
Thanks for your quick reponse. It IS possible to be related to memory. I re-started Apache and MySQL, now the problem is gone.
However, I still do not know why. I increased memory to 32M in php.ini and re-boot the computer, thus apache as well as the computer was restarted. The problem was still there. This time, I re-started the apache and Mysql only. It should be the same as rebooting the computer. Anyway it works.
I had a look at the apache error log: there are many lines of:
[new_snode] Warning: String exceeds storage size
