Drupal 4.6.3 / 4.5.5 released

The Drupal project has released version 4.6.3 of its open-source content management platform. Drupal 4.6.3 is a maintenance release that fixes problems reported using the bug tracking system. Drupal 4.6.3 also fixes a new security vulnerability in the third-party XML-RPC library that Drupal ships with. Since the same bug is also present in the Drupal 4.5 series, Drupal 4.5.5 is released as well. If you cannot upgrade at once, we strongly suggest that you remove the xmlrpc.php file from your Drupal installation's root directory. The xmlrpc.php file is used only for Drupal to receive XML-RPC calls.

Upgrading your existing Drupal sites is strongly recommended; otherwise your site may get compromised by malicious persons.

There are no new features in these installments. For more information about the Drupal 4.6.x release series, please consult the Drupal 4.6.0 release announcement.

audio module released

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to announce that I have released a first version of the audio module. The audio module lets authorized users upload, stream, and download audio files from their site. ID3 meta information (such as song title, artist, etc...) is read in from the audio file and updates made on the site are also written back to the ID3 tags in the file. Audio files show up with proper enclosure tags in RSS feeds, so this should be suitable for podcasting.

Drupal supports Atom 1.0

As effective from now, Drupal fully supports Atom 1.0 syndication standard, both in-core parsing and generating full-content Atom feeds using Atom module.
We are looking forward to integate more Atom 1.0 features in future such as enclosures, flexible linking methods and extensive metadata support.

OpenMall project

The OpenMall project is a pre-packaged Drupal distribution with the e-commerce modules loaded. The idea is to facilitate the use of Drupal for e-commerce and widen Drupal's user base, benefiting many.

Google Summer of Code: status update August 2005

With just three weeks to go in the Google Summer of Code project, it's time to look at what our student stipend recipients have done so far, and what we as a community can do to help them down the final stretch. I sent a mail to everyone involved asking for a status report, and also for some feedback on how the project has been going so far in general. The responses have been summarized below.

How we chose Drupal: a stirring first-person narrative

I've written up a document on choosing a platform for telecentre.org. Telecentre.org is a project of Canada's International Development Research Centre, jointly funded by IDRC and Microsoft, aimed at linking up all the telecentres around the world.

The vision is for a distributed network of web sites that share content via RSS and tags, and we concluded that Drupal is currently the best option for this purpose. But we considered a number of options before making this decision, which I have documented in a short document that is available online or PDF form. It may be useful to others who are working on similar visions of multiple sites that work together to share content and build community.
