LinkedIn, Six Apart and Drupal

Dear All,

Today LinkedIn has started their Social Application pitch.

I am developing a blogging/forum community entirely based on Drupal. Each community member has a LinkedIn profile (but it could have been a facebook one, Hi5 one etc).

I have always dreamed to find a way to integrate Drupal with other social networks in ordert to grow my community. Today I just sawe my dream come true!

Six Apart published a tool on LinkedIn that make you integrate LinkedIn pages with your preferred blog system (Six apart's one, Wordpress etc). So a community member can make a blog post on Linkedin and such a post will be displayed in the main Moveable Type/ Wordpress/... blogging site and vice versa.

This is fantastic! Moreover, Six Apart stated they want to support a broad range of blogging platform, so the first thing I thought was "let's see if they supprt Drupal or not!" But I was unable to find Drupal in their list of available platform.

Now, I know that their tool is an OpenSocial one. I would like to get feedback from the Drupal community about steps that would be necessary if I decide to try to integrate Drupal in such a tool or - really BETTER - to develop some "general plugin" in order to make Drupal dialog and expose content on LinkedIn, Hi5, Facebook etc etc etc.

- Should I try?

Drupal wins 2008 Best PHP Open Source CMS from Packt Publishing

For the third year in a row, Drupal has been nominated for a Packt Publishing Open Source CMS award. Packt Publishing is announcing winners all week. Today they announced the 2008 best PHP open source CMS.

The Award for the best Open Source Content Management System written on a PHP/MySQL platform is today announced as Drupal. Receiving $2,000 as the judges’ and publics favourite, Drupal finishes ahead of Joomla! and CMS Made Simple, who finished on equal points as joint runners up and collect $500 each.

Drupal won this award in both the popular vote and the judges selection. The judges cited improvements to installation, updates, breadth of features in modules, and how Drupal handles errors in these processes. Of special note was Drupal's use of social features and how those features integrate with web content management. Of course the final advantage Drupal had was the "large and hugely supportive community". This award belongs to everyone in the Drupal community for helping each other and particularly new users.

New German book about holistic site developement with Drupal 6

I am very pleased to announce that a new German book about Drupal 6 is on its way to the book stores: "Praxiswissen Drupal 6" by Olav Schettler and Friedrich Stahl.

In this book, we describe the construction of a musicians' community using Drupal 6. As opposed to the Drupal bible by John VanDyk we also cover the modules used in the project to a good measure.

We wrote two more chapters that unfortunately we could not incorporate into the final book because the needed modules were not ready: A complete webshop with Übercart with German VAT and a chapter about integrating Drupal with the popular SixCMS 7. I plan to publish these chapters electronically on my website.

May Drupal live long and prosper!
Olav

2008 Best PHP Based Open Source CMS : "DRUPAL"

The Award for the best Open Source Content Management System written on a PHP/MySQL platform is today announced as Drupal. Receiving $2,000 as the judges’ and publics favourite, Drupal finishes ahead of Joomla! and CMS Made Simple, who finished on equal points as joint runners up and collect $500 each.

In what is fast becoming familiar feedback from the judging panel, the task of selecting a top three was made difficult by the high standards and features offered by the finalists. This was particularly evident with both Joomla! and CMS Made Simple tying for the first runner up. The judges’ all made comments on the strengths and power offered by each CMS.

In the end, it was a combination of features that swayed the final votes and secured first position. The judges were complimentary about Drupal’s excellent installation of the system, modules and updates and especially the way it handles any errors during these processes. Comments were also reserved for Drupal’s strong social applications capabilities and how it integrates seamlessly with content management.
