There's a new tool available to help fight spam in the Drupal world. Spamicide is a new module that works to prevent spam submission (comments, contacts, bogus users, etc...) to your site. It doesn't require user interaction as it adds a field to Drupal forms (with a meaningful description shown to screen reader for accessibility) that is hidden by a very small css file of the same name as the field.

Packt today launches the new Packt Author of the Year 2009 Award, with the winner receiving a $1000 cash prize and a commemorative trophy.

The Packt Author Award 2009 is open to authors of all Packt books published during 2008, including revised editions of older titles. The first prize will be $1000 cash and a commemorative plaque.

“In April 2009, Packt Publishing reaches its fifth birthday,” says Packt Editorial Director Louay Fatoohi. “We are leaving our preschool years behind and we wish to celebrate with a thank you present to our most essential asset – our authors”.

Packt’s first book was released in April 2004. Since then it has published over 200 titles in printed and electronic form. In total, Packt has published work from over 250 authors.

Packt will use an open vote to select five finalists from among the eligible authors. These finalists will have their work examined by a panel of judges, who will select the overall winner based on the quality of their work, and their contribution to the tech community.

This is the first time that a tech publisher has recognized the work of their authors in this way.

The judges are:
•Cristian Darie, an experienced author who has published titles with Packt, Wrox, Apress, and SitePoint
•Louay Fatoohi, editorial director for Packt Publishing

London, UK (May 03 2009) Univalence Ltd, a London based company established in 2008, is today launching a Drupal module for Anatoa, the new online fraud detection service directed at membership based websites run by individual webmasters as well as small and medium companies.

The service addresses both so-called profile scam and abusive members, both major reasons for membership based websites not reaching their full potential.

The typical example of profile scam is the "Nigerian 419 scam", in which organised fraudsters, often based in West Africa, use promises of large amounts of money to defraud people they contact on the Internet.

Anatoa provides a service for detection and automated detection of these fraudsters, using WebServices technology and ready-made plugins for 20 of the most popular software packages used by websites today. By combining input from all members of the service, new fraudsters are quickly detected and prevented from conducting their activity on all members' websites. The service is free for most websites, with charging models coming into account for those with a large member base.
