User Profile field - drop down list required

In an existing Drupal 4.7 site, I have just been asked to add a new field to the user profile. Only trouble is the client wants a drop-down list populated from a database table and 4.7 doesn't appear to have this option - it only has "list selection" and "freeform list".

The options for "List Selection" seem to only be a hard-coded list entered at set up time. Is there any way of populating the resulting drop-down via PHP?

Thanks
Terry

patched and updated 4.7.7, can't login

I replaced the files in my Drupal installation that changed in the 4.7.7 patch:

bootstrap.inc
common.inc
poll.module
profile.module
user.module
system.module
settings.php

I put the relevant info back into settings.php and ran update.php

Now I keep getting "network error" and can't login!

No categories selectable or associated with forum topic or post

The problem: I enabled the forum module one day looking to start using it on my site (it had been disabled across many upgrades from Drupal 4.7 to 5.1 to 5.2), but I noticed that categories were unavailable for selection (absence of the category drop-down) when making a post despite there being forum, forum containers and corresponding forum vocabulary in the admin area and database tables (i.e., TIDs, etc.). Consequently, posts were not placed in any forum containers/categories.

Need help backing up my site B4 upgrading from 4.7 to 5.1

Hi all,

I'm a very nervous neophyte who is looking to upgrade my Drupal 4.7 site to 5.1 ... the main reason for this case of the nerves is that -- like everyone in this situation -- I'm afraid of losing files, esp. since they belong to the college newspaper that I advise. The fact that I'm a idiot with anything involving a server doesn't help, either. So apologies in advance for some questions that are so basic that I don't even realize I should be embarassed for not knowing their answers.

Here's the deal: Siteground hosts my site and I've read over the upgrade walk-thrus authored by Drupal and siteground.

This page ( http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/drupal-tutorial/drupal_backup.htm ) gives me two options. I've played around with both and am unsure about both of them. Any help or confirmation that I'm doing OK would be appreciated.

    METHOD ONE

Using the phpMyadmin tool, I exported a file named localhost.sql that was 32.3 mb in size. Nervous that this didn't seem right, I tried again and got a file named XXXXXX_drpl1.sql (where the XXXXXX is my user1 ID) that also was 32.3 mb. I'm thinking that 32.3 mb in size may be a little light for all the content, but then again, given that the content was predominantly text and we're only talking two-semester's worth, I'm not so sure.

Active signs and tables

I'm using the newer template Active Signs.
The problem I am having in IE6 is tables that I code within the body of a page end up remaining at the bottom of the page, below the right and left sidebar blocks.
In firefox it does not do this and with older templates it does not either.
When I remove the

tags from the body all of the content goes back to normal "the top" but is not formatted in cells.
Is this a css problem?
