With just one day of work, we were able to, using the Profile module, build a database of people who are willing to house and transport Hurricane Katrina victims. We'll be delivering lists of candidates and profile information to the Red Cross.
Doesn't matter how far away--in the continental U.S.--you live. After the devastating floods along the Mississippi River of eight years ago, about fifteen percent of people simply walked away and never came back. You can help people build a new life, or at least have a comfortable place to sleep for a few weeks.

Technically, we're still doing some work on the site. We don't have the transportation options up as of this writing, but I'll be putting in a few hours this morning building the forms using the Profile module. Then, of course, we need to finish the query interface (usable only by relief workers). Come by and drop a comment in the forums if you have suggestions for how we could do this better.
And if you're a PHP coder with some spare time on your hands, we could really use one. I didn't sleep for 30 hours so that we could get this up and running. Unfortunately, my PHP skills are minimal (though my system administration skills are prodigious). My partner, Paul, on the other hand, can code like a god but doesn't have much spare time. We could use some help on better methods of getting this data to the Red Cross than our current approach: import the entire database into an OpenOffice spreadsheet, print it out, and hand-deliver to the RC :)
