I finally bit the bullet and upgraded from 4.6 to 4.7, a laborious process with our insanely slow connection out here. Of course, I completely hashed my old theme, itself a bastardized mutated version of Stephen Witten's blueelectric, so I set about seeing what I could do to get a new look for the new Drupal.
The excellent adc theme is very amenable to modification--easy to read and understand--and after less than two hours of playing, I had something good enough for my own use. Most of the changes are colors, but also size and spacing issues for text and blocks.
