Post installation

OK. I am confused. I installed Drupal 4.5, it's working smoothly but I am running into some issues I cannot explain.

1. I enabled "forums" in the list of modules, created a vocabulary, assigned this vocabulary to the "forum topic" node and created various terms as well. When I look at this vocabulary in admin, it all looks fine and the terms are lined up correctly as well. I created a node, assigned this note to a term in my forum vocabulary and that works fine.

I have a request from a user to integrate online forums with email so he can read and reply to posts via email because he travels a lot and would have more time to read and respond offline via email. Is there a canned module or any suggestions on how to do this in Drupal 4.5?

What's the best way to limit access to specific articles? I'd like some articles to be open to all, but others limited to only a certain role. I am hoping to keep my taxonomy the same for all users because it describes by data hierarchically and I could have articles fall in one vocabulary and term that only specific roles can access. I looked at the taxonomoy access module and decided to pass on using it for that very reason.

I'd like to generate Drupal installations where some Role-based levels of access are "invitation only", any thoughts on how to do this?

By this I mean that there is no public sign-up registration at all, the only way to gain a certain level of role-based access is via an invitation from an existing member (Therefore the admin would have to start it). You might also have no other Role involvement at all so it would essentially be completely private web site that no one else can find out it exists apart from those involved in it.

I'm trying to migrate my image gallery to a Drupal page node (PHP code type).

The gallery view depends on a second PHP page, renderer.php, which outputs a thumbnail image (generating this on the fly from larger originals). Currently I'm stuck because the output of rendere.php which should be a JPG image is preceded by the standard Drupal layout: menu, sidebar. Is it possible to turn this off for one specific page? Do I need to create a custom node to implement this, or is this a theme issue?
