Drupal is up and running but how do I ...?

visible pages/forums etc

Ok, now before anyone tells me there are a lot of other postings out there telling me to have a look at the og mod, simple access, taxonomy control, node by role, and all the rest of them (and yes, I have tried quite a few) I just cant seem to easily be able to do what it is I am trying to do.

For starters, the administration configuration screen only allows you to add/subtract the right of people/roles to edit or administer nodes/blogs etc etc. Why cant we just have one extra one that is simply for viewing the content? To me that would be far simpler and all editable in one place.

So what I want to achieve is (and as simply as possible) make it that only special users see blogs at all, but all the mods I've seen will allow a user to accidently create their blog in the public area. Not what I want. Or maybe that a special group of users are the only ones who can see a particular menu type or section of forums. Of all the mods, it just seems so hard to make sure people do the right thing. I am reluctant to keep loading in new mods all the time because of the potential database mods being made by each one.

So, a big one for me is two fold:

1) Make a page/section so it is only viewable by particular roles.

2) Make it so that particular roles are the only ones to see special menu items within the navigation block.

I'm guessing number two is going to be very hard, so if someone could direct me to a tutorial on how to make a block visible to only 1 or 2 roles, that would almost suffice. But again, I need to be able to be sure that noone can miscreate an item in the wrong place.

Any ideas people?

Thanks in advance, this is really a very informative community! GO DRUPAL!

How do I present a page only once a day for a user?

I would like to present users to my website with an advertisement once per day. To accomplish this, I have tried to create a module that will set a cookie when they visit for the first time and show them the ad. Then, for every subsequent page, it checks for that cookie and shows them the regular content if they've seen the ad already.

However, using the code below doesn't seem to work very well. People are seeing the ads more than once per day.

Profiles categories and fields. Is it possible to change languages?

I am building a bilingual website. in Spanish and Portuguese. I am currently building extra fields for users registration, and have found no way to determine the language of the profiles categories names. I am working under the clumsy solution of writing the categories and fields in both languages. Is there a way to extend the asesome power of i18n.module to categories and fields? Would be really great. The whole purpose of doing my site bilingual is having my Brazilian and Hispanic users at ease, and the registration area is key for their perception of the site.

Enable single signon between Drupal & TNG genealogy

I started to use Drupal very recently and I like it very much. Almost all i needed was available in one way or another. What i did not found was a proper Genealogy module. I have been using TNG (www.lythgoes.net) and would like to keep on using it.Having made integration modules for this app for PostNuke & Mambo, i looked into the options of doing the same for Drupal.
Drupal actually makes it very easy. Using the "page" content and a special index script for TNG it works perfectly.

Profiles fields not showing in 4/6/3

I am working under Drupal 4.6.3. Enabled the profiles module. It doesn't show in modules, but I assume thats' ok since it shows in settings/profiles. I created a couple of fields to check out how they work. I declared them "Public field, content shown on profile page and on member list pages" and declared them "Visible in user registration form".
Now, hen I go to user/account I get two options under edit: account settings and the category I created. Fine.
