Post installation

I have a default.htm for the front page; But How I can change it? and Where do I need to upload the default.htm?
Now the setting is defined "node".

Can anyone suggest the best contrib modules to use to present member information (including profile, nodes tagged with these member terms, contact details etc) from an end-user's point of view?

I have three categories of members for a non-profit network in a vocabulary, with the top parent term being 'members' and the urls looking like:

Hello All,

Been playing with the survey module (which uses the forms module), and I came up with a petition form. I have the following:

1. Name
2. Email
3. Location
4. Comments

All of which are required fields, except #4 (the comments).

The survey module does not support publically viewable output, so I'm trying to figure it out external to that module's development.

So I have a a new drupal site up and running, but I am still unsure about a couple of things.

1. To change colors on my site, do I simply edit the themes style sheet?
2. How about reposition things, such as the search box if i enable it, what if I wanted it an inch to the left or up, where do I set that?

If I've missed this info, please tell me where, I've been scouring all the docs for simple answers.

I just installed drupal and everything worked fine.

The one things that does not seem to be working is the mail. if I try to register a new account or send mail to my own admin account no mail appears in my inbox. If i check my logs it shows the mail event and that it was successful. the email on my server (dreamhost) is working fine and I can't figure out what is the problem.

where can I find more documentation? what is the best way to error check this problem?
