I'm currently investigating the possibilities of creating a community-specific news website and have downloaded and installed Drupal. So far, so good, I must say, most of the themes are neat and with my altering, they just might even become a bit neater ;)
However, as I said, I will be creating a news website. I'm not new at PHP coding, but I don't really feel like digging into the Drupal source code to make it work the way I want it to. I normally screw these kind of things up so badly, it's just not worth the trouble. Therefore, let us say I'm a total noob regarding PHP so I would not have to use my 1337 PHP skills0rz =P
I am Dutch, so I use the website http://www.nu.nl on a daily basis and I like the concept of that website. It supports six main news categories, including "general", "economical" and "sports" news. Those are listed in the left menu. In the main "content" section on the home page, it lists eight headlines in four of those categories, showing the title, a related image and a quote from the latest headline and just the titles of seven older news headlines. Clicking on one of the categories in the left menu, will list the last eight headlines including title, image and an excerpt from the text and another fifty or so titles from older headlines.
I would like to do the same on my news website (in a different layout and with different categories, but the idea would be the same), but I would like to have your ideas first on whether this would be possible without too much effort and, if so, which modules to install and use and how to configure Drupal.
