Post installation

I am new to drupal and i need your help to put all together.

The Big Picture

I need to create a page to store non-compressed images (up to 50mb) accessible only for logged in users.

The page contains thumbnails + links to the non-compressed images.

the url of the thumbnails and images are stored in a mysql database.

If the user belongs to the manager role, there is a button to the bottom of the page to upload other images.

As I am new, please with which of the listed modules you can create the selectors, e.g. on http://drupal.org/project/Modules - "Filter by Drupal Core compatibility" and "Browse by ...name, date, category".

I guess tracker module has serious issue. We don't notice on it here on Drupal.org, because all the comment are placed in the same page with the first post. But I have forums on my website with some threads which will continue forever, and it is impossible not to brake threads into pages. Well, when I configure comments to have some maximum number in one page and brake long threads into many pages, then the issue with tracker module rises - it does not lead to last comment page, but always leads to the first one. And this apparently is an issue.

I don't get the translation of modules.

I have set in my site, under localization, Spanish language with international code 'es' and the site is translated.

The problem is that modules like notify that have under folder /po the spanish tranlation "es.po" don't read it and it appears in english.

I have enabled in the server php gettext extension.

Any idea of what could be wrong?

In my local testing set up I have two drupal 4.7.5 installs. They are identical, clean installs with no other modules added, in fact the only thing I've done is create the first user. And yet in one site the clean url test works and I can enable them, and in the other site I get an error page when I try the test.

Can anyone shed any light on this, I'm baffled?

For info, I'm using the latest version of MAMP, each site directory is set up as a virtual host and this is properly configured in NetInfo and httpd.conf
