Dynamic/Personalized Taxonomies, Privacy Control

Hi, I'm looking into doing a large-scale Drupal rollout, and am interested in creating dynamic aggregations based on either role or taxonomy.

The thing is that for either of these, I'll need to not only dynamically populate the role/taxonomy, but dynamically create it as well. Is one easier to work with than the other?

For example:

Student A is enrolled in Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 during a semester.
Student B is enrolled in Class 1, Class 45, Class 149

Project for 4.5?

Hi, I have installed drupal in my website version 4.5 but there is still no 'project' module available for that version. I was told to try CVS version, which I did. But that version is totally broken, because it doesn't show the projects in the main area only 'my projects' and I also can't understand how to create new releases (i've only used that version).
And yes I know 'project' is used in drupal.org itself and it is working on 4.5 but mine doesn't :S

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

How idealist was the Idealist.org design contest?

When I see the results of the Idealist design contest I realize how much more work there is to do in changing minds and ways. Yes, they're beautiful websites, but I ask Idealist to DEFINE functionality.

"Its [idealist contest] purpose was to acknowledge and reward those designers who moved beyond the medium's limitations to create works that are functional and aesthetically powerful while also promoting social impact." -Sothern Poverty Law Center (SPLC gold prize winner) Website.

I would say the mediums' biggest limitations are cost and sustainability. Cost of proprietary web platform (content manangement) systems and the effect or lack of effect using such a system has on spreading the ability to use valuable technology for more organizations. I'm hypothesizing SPLC uses a proprietary system, w/ java server pages... Sustainability is again related to the cost, as well as who is able to admin the website and from where- both cost and ease. For example, the Nepal Forward site was not updated w/ news since 2003....and not just 2003, but January 2003...that's almost 2 years ago! It's almost 2 years dead. In fact, if you go look at it in the Internet Archives, it's the same now as it was in Feb. 2003. Maybe they have no need to communicate on a regular basis...or use other forms? They're soliciting donations...maybe there is a big print campaign to send folks to the website to volunteer, donate, get involved?

What do those red stars on the download page mean?

Hmm, I thought I posted this but it got lost somewhere in the ethereal. So what do those red stars on the download page mean? I could not find any corresponding text to read.

Blogging tools

There are a number of tools that make blogging more easy, often it is an application other than a browser from where you can add postings to a site.

A good example is wbloggar. This is a generic windows tool that enables persons to blog towards different kinds of engines, amongst other drupal. The advantages of using a tool like that are one can use templates, have integrated spellcheck and a rather easy way of making a post.

The disadvantages are however bigger:

  • One can only use it on Windows platforms
  • The license is "freeware" without being free, it is not Open Source
  • There is no way to integrate the powerful taxomony of drupal with the post
  • And most of all, people have to get used to yet another interface / program

.

While the advantages of the tool can be used without having the disadvantages. One
can have the power of the context menu "blog" this when surfing in a browser, and stay within the browser while doing the post. Thereby having the advantages of the browser (normal userinterface, normal extra radio-buttons and dropdown-menus like taxonomy or the ability to promote the posting) and best of all, it is Open Source.

justblogit is such a tool. It is a XUL extensions of a better browser so it installs on all where platforms where mozilla / firefox is ported to.

Open Source Content Management Systems: An Argumentative Approach

Today when I visited Jeffrey Veen's weblog, I found this interesting report written by Dimitrios Michelinakis. In his report's abstract, Dimitrios wrote:
