I'm trying to make a block that will display individual user avatars and names (in a way of welcoming). Can anyone please help?

Can someone please explain to me how to achieve a highlighted column, such as that used in the drupal forums under td.active. I have been to http://drupal.org/node/6863, read through it, but I am using 4.5.0. As the the above link shows, the issue is far older than my drupal version and is already solved for 4.5.0, yet I cannot for the life of me manage to create this effect. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I tried # but didn't work. I tried documentation and forum posts but can't find any info. I just want a menu item that doesn't pull any content and serves only as a parent for other menu items. What would i put in its PATH box? Sorry about such an elementary question.
