Some thoughts on categories

IT Conversations has published a free audio interview with Clay Shirky, titled: Ontology is Overrated

There are many ways to organize data: labels, lists, categories, taxonomies, ontologies. Of these, ontology -- assertions about essence and relations among a group of items -- seems to be the highest-order method of organization. Indeed, the predicted value of the Semantic Web assumes that ontological successes such as the Library of Congress's classification scheme are easily replicable. (...)

Menu Placement

Hello - does anyone know how I can require a log in before people can see the navigation menu? If you visit www.visionunity.com/vui (and watch the intro or click on skip), you will see what I mean. The Navigation window on the right would be fine on the next page after someone logs in, but I don't want it there on the first page. Thanks in advance for your help.

article taxonomy afterthought

if one failed to set up categories for their site content in the beginning, but now wants to, and then does:

can one go back and file the existing content under those categories?

and if they do, will the original links still work (aliased, much like the way implementing clean urls didn't mess up original links other sites had posted to my content)?

thanks in advance,
susan

read count - source?

Does anyone know where the code is for extracting the read count? Because I didn't set up taxonomies when I set the site up, I have a page set up with just links to my original work/articles and wanted to include the (dynamic) read count. Anyone know how I could do that?

Files uploaded as user "web" - problem...

I'm just getting to grips with my first installation of drupal (4.6) & have just uploaded an image and inserted it into a node which is all amazingly easy to do - good work!

However, I just noticed that the newly upload file is owned by "web" which is problematic as i'm running a virtual server i.e. if web runs out of space, the whole server goes down + user quota info won't accurately reflect FTP user quotas.

Does anybody have advice for how to get around this problem, am I missing something obvious ?

Cheers

Tom

corrupt db? random anonymous posts?

I recently unpublished almost everything on my site, it is being used for a college class... after doing this about 20 random anonymous posts appeared promoted to the front page. They say they were posted 12/31 of 1969, and they are uneditable (if you try you end up having to add info, because they are blank, in order to save them then you can eliminate the new post you've created but the random blank one remains). I disallow anonymous posts so it is even stranger that they show up as anonymous.
