Drupal 101 (for newbies only)

I said for newbies only

If you are not a newbie - get out of this class and do not read any futher.

-----------------------------

After working with drupal for the last couple of weeks I have come to an understanding and I want to share it with the newbies who come behind me.

Someone mentioned in a thread that drupal's identity is somewhat hidden or unknown.

In newbie terms I offer this analogy to help you in your journey.

When searching for a CMS you may have read reviews and tried many different packages and for whatever reason made your final decision to use drupal.

Despite all the trouble I have had I can honestly say you made a good choice.

But before you pat yourself on the back there is something about that choice that you really really need to understand.

Most of us have or use cars as a form of transportation right? - So instead of using tech language that may confuse you I will describe it in terms of buying a car.

Lesson number one:

The phrase ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is an understatement.

Please do not misunderstand what I am saying. The software is complete as far as being able to download it, install it and getting your site up and going.

What I am referring to is more like this.

Your decision for choosing drupal may have been because you read a review about a drupal hall of famer site that says.

"Drupal is the best CMS the world has ever known because with it you can have this Ferrari of a site.

new module: userreview

I just published yet another voting module called "userreview".
http://drupal.org/node/53611

This one permits users to post a review against any node. A review consists of a voting widget (0-10), a title, and a comment field. This module is for Drupal 4.7, and it requires votingapi and views modules.

Using Drupal with public access (TV) CG

I am in charge of the educational public access station in my town. Currently we have a static powerpoint presentation which is aired when no programs are playing which shows announcements and upcoming program information (as I'm sure just about any public access station these days does). If I want to add an announcement, I bring the powerpoint off air, modify the file, and then rerun the powerpoint..

As a self-proclaimed computer guru and a tweaker; this is unacceptable!! :)

Anyway, here's my thought as to using Drupal in a setup to enhance my presentation; please comment if you find any holes in my logic or have any other (doable) suggestions

I want to have a drupal site (duh) in which registered users (only a select few approved by myself) are able to add/remove content. I will syndicate so that others can see the announcements in their newsreaders, but also so that a separate system can pull it, probably once daily, and generate an HTML based slideshow from it which is what will actually be aired on the television station.

I've done a preliminary look through Google and the like and have not been able to find anything that seems to fit my needs as far as generating the HTML presentation from RSS, so I may have to develop that myself. I've never really worked with RSS before, but I'm assuming it shouldn't be too difficult.

To me, the benefits of using a system like this include ease of addition/removal of content, automatic expiration of outdated content, inherant duplication of data (i.e., since the data is already on the website I don't have to copy the powerpoint there, etc.)

Social networks and aging / memory of content?

Hi,

is there any "social" software out there that understands the concept of a "time line" and the concept "forgetting" old content?

I am looking for pointers to sites and/or papers where these items might already have been discussed.
