Why are there 2 prints of $title?

I've always wondered about this, why does the code below exist in both page.tpl.php and node.tpl.php?

Add a rel="" attribute to image links

Is there a way to add extra attributes like the "rel" attribute to the <a> tag of images? I have a field which allows users to upload product shots but my image links only has "href" in them. I'm using Fancybox for my images and in order for them to be displayed as a gallery, they also need to have a "rel" attribute.

My alternate solution is to use jQuery to add the "rel" attribute but that's only if nothing really works. Say it isn't so!

Different content layouts for different pages ( 3 columns for home, 1 for profile, etc. )

Hi,

I would like to make my theme to be made of 3 columns in which I will be able to place blocks. But other pages like user profile or user forums require one column layout. How can I achieve that?

Search Bar Box Size

I have a search box, http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/searchbox.jpg/, and I would like to be able to expand the white space where text is entered or make it so that the borders are not as thick. How would I go about doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
