Installing Drupal

I've noticed that when I change a preference in the Drupal settings that the change takes place, but that the HTML page does not refresh to indicate the change was made. For example I changed the setting for creating a new account so that only administrators could create new accounts. However the change that I made to the radio button group didn't stick. I had to actually navigate out to the home page before I received any kind of confirmation telling me that the change had been made.

What are the possible explanations of this?

I just tried to install drupal for the first time. I followed all the instructions and
I modified the settings.php like that:

$db_url = 'mysql://U******:pwd@rdbms.strato.de/DB*****';
$db_prefix = '';

$base_url = 'www.mysite.com/drupal';
(which is the folder containing drupal on my server!)

Problem: Cannot login first time

I have tried to search for posts regarding installation of fckeditor, but none has a solution for me. (e.g. http://drupal.org/node/16952)

I have tried to change my base_path (my installation is in a subfolder called drupal):
$base_path = variable_get("fckeditor_base_path", 'drupal/modules/fckeditor/lib/');

I have also changed the Base Path in the settings of fckeditor to:
/drupal/modules/fckeditor/lib

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /var/www/html/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 31

Could somebody please help me with the above error.

Has anyone had problems getting thumbnails created in the images module?

I get the following....
"Unable to create thumbnail image"
but I atleast get the full sized image.

Could it be permissions? The permissions of the image created are the following...
/files/images/
-rw-r--r-- 1 apache apache 8426 May 2 20:24 HHY1.jpg
and
/files/images/temp/
-rw-r--r-- 1 apache apache 8426 May 2 20:24 HHY1.jpg
