Drupal is growing fast, and the planet is starting to get unwieldy (to some people). Most large content-heavy sites give you the opportunity to select certain feeds around your content interest, and there's no reason we can't do so. At the moment I think we should have a "development" (possibly a 'general development' and 'drupal development' feed) and "business" feed. I also think a 'local' feed might be nice. Of course, I would personally still like to subscribe to it all (is it that hard to scan the titles of posts in google reader? nope, not at all), so having a 'full feed' would be great as well.
I marked this as a Google Code-In task, which I would consider to be mostly a documentation and outreach effort, though there will certainly need to be some coding done as well.

webchickWe're not throwing new open source contributors into a community mine field. Removing gci tags.
If you can build consensus around what needs to be implemented, we can revisit. Please follow the instructions for proposing a GCI task, though.

dave reidSeems like this is a redesign phase 2 task?

sunPlenty of discussions and ideas in #1035184: Form a community consensus on Planet Drupal guidelines
Next step is to come up with a list of requirements that we have in mind for planet.drupal.org. Afterwards, see what can be done.

bonobo commentedWe can do some brainstorming around this in Chicago. Some face to face discussions, some whiteboarding, etc, could move this along.

cweagansI would like to see Managing News used as the new Planet Drupal aggregator platform. It can be re-themed to match d.o, if necessary. The main feed could be the firehose. Channels would represent topics (press releases, site building tutorials/documentation, developer tutorials/documentation).

gerhard killesreiter commentedTheming would be neccessary, yes. Otherwise I am ok with any Drupal solution.

cweagansJust cleaning out some old issues.
This is postponed until Managing News is ported to Drupal 7. Perhaps when I have some free time (ha!), I'll see what I can do in that field.

mgifford@cweagans - Well, that doesn't seem like it is going to happen https://drupal.org/project/managingnews
I'm going to mark this as Won't Fix but please feel to re-open it.

christefano commentedAfter hosting a Managing News site on planetdrupal.org back in 2010, I eventually shut it down due to lack of resources. It was nice having a searchable archive of Planet Drupal but the database was getting really big.
Bonnie Bogle at Development Seed (the original creators of Managing News) liked it and tweeted this about it :)

planetdrupal.org now redirects to this issue. Count me in if there's anything I can do to help.
