Well, I'm new around here, i.e., l10n.d.o, but I find missing that although the *strong* and *em* HTML tags are allowed the shorter alternatives *b* and *i* aren't. Isn't conciseness a good thing? Why make users write more if they can do the same writing less?

Also markdown support would be really nice to have.

Thank you,

Just fixed a title typo.

Those are deprecated HTML tags, so I'd be willing to say that's why they're not supported.

B and I are not shorter forms of any other tags, STRONG and EM means different things. The internet is full of advice: http://www.google.com/search?&q=strong+vs+b

Gábor,
I know that. Usually the style that browsers apply makes both *em* == *i* and *strong* = *b*. Yes it's true that *strong* and *em* have a more contextual meaning, whereas *b* and *i* are the names of the typographic devices that usually are used to implement these variations. A bold weight of the font currently being used and an italic shape respectively. I know that you can reset the user agent stylesheet and give *strong* and *em* different typographic interpretations. Although that would go against the practice of centuries of typography.

For me is just a practical issue. Less characters to type to achieve an effect. In g.d.o I can use it.

Dave,
I don't think that they're deprecated, the FAQ for HTML 5 has a quick note and links to the full discussion.

How about we remove those from groups.drupal.org since they are not really appropriate anywhere on d.o.

g.d.o uses markdown as a means to reduce the amount of typing we force on end users. Perhaps l.d.o could use that as well.

I notice those tags are allowed on Drupal.org as well. They should be removed from here too.

Yes markdown on l.d.o is definitely a good idea. Thank you.
