i did it like that:

function espacioenter_preprocess_views_slideshow_ddblock(&$vars) {
  drupal_rebuild_theme_registry();
  $settings = $vars['views_slideshow_ddblock_slider_settings'];
  $block = array ('block_1', 'block_2', 'block_3');
  // for showing debug info
  views_slideshow_ddblock_show_content_debug_info($vars);
  if ($settings['output_type'] == 'view_fields') {
    if ($settings['view_name'] == 'news_items' && in_array($settings['view_display_id'] , $block) )

Just having different views displays available. It worked with the code above.

For normal usage most functionality can be done without any preprocess functions for version 2.x of the module.

Till now I never had to use the preprocess functions with version 2.x of the module
