When the page first loads, for a fraction of a second, you can see all
of the images in the slideshow arranged vertically...

It was recommended that I change the height variable in the slideshow
to the height of the image plus 50 pixels. I have done that, but the
display problem persists...

If I put a javascript widget elsewhere on the page the problem persists for a longer time, as it takes longer to load the page...

FYI, I downgraded to version 6.x-2.1 and the problem went away. So perhaps this is a bug?

This would be because the js isn't loading fast enough on the page. You would have to find out what's loading slow and see if you can speed it up. I tested your site on chrome and firefox and I don't see the issue.

I am also having this problem with D7. A little bit of experimentation suggest that it only happens with CSS aggregation enabled.

Found the bug! And here's the patch.

And in case my patch file doesn't work, here's the explanation:

The contents of views_slideshow_cycle.css were not finding their way into aggregated css files because of a malformed call to drupal_add_css in views_slideshow_cycle.module (clearly a Drupal6->7 porting oversight). That meant that the class .views_slideshow_cycle_hidden was left undefined.

drupal_add_css($module_path . '/views_slideshow_cycle.css', 'module'); -> drupal_add_css($module_path . '/views_slideshow_cycle.css', 'file');
