Once it is on is is on. No obvious way to switch if off.

Probably duplicate of #278401: Hover pause too big issue and disable hover pause option, and #222685: Option to not pause on hover, although it should be included as proper distributed fix not patch.

The patch http://drupal.org/files/issues/hover_pause_0.patch is ancient and vs. 5.x, this feature needs to be properly implemented in 6.x.

The hover pause causes problems when using slideshows of many images of different size. If a larger image shows, the slideshow can suddenly stop when the mouse pointer is suddenly "inside" the boundary (of the larger image).
