To update myself, you can alter the field pager.. in the field-field tpl.

- print $view->style_plugin->rendered_fields[$count][$field];
+ print $count;
Whilst destroying most of what beautiful pager does.

I took it out because this can be accomplished using fields. Just add the field Global: view result counter. Remove the title and exclude it from the display and it will give you what you are looking for.

This doesn't quite fix the issue. From a themers standpoint there are no active classes applied to the pager items. Would really be useful to add a "numbered" option in addition to "fields" option.

I know this issue is pretty old, but there is actually a class added to the active slide called "active".

You can use the following class for bottom controls:
.views-slideshow-controls-bottom .active
