It would be good to indicate a selection is required/mandatory (with the coloured asterisk) in the form when it appears to a user or for a new registration.

Yeah, this is due to a validation bug. I was never able to figure out a solution and thus had to set the field "required" attribute to FALSE (and subsequently suppresses the asterisk). I suppose one could be added with theming.
