Shipping/ Quote modules

I am working with a new install (completely clean) of both Drupal (5.x) and Ubercart (1.4). I have all of the modules in and I THINK configured. (Including shipping options (USPS/ UPS were my choices) in both the configure store section and the product section. I have made up a product section using size and weight of a Post Office Priority Mail, delivered box.)

When I place an order, I either get a very long connection issue going to the USPS to get a quote (normally never 'ends'). If it does end, I get the following 'error':

"There were problems getting a shipping quote. Please verify the delivery and product information and try again.
If this does not resolve the issue, please call in to complete your order."

In addition, when I submit the order for review, I get a 'red box' error at the top of the screen that I need to chose a shipping method, yet am never offered shipping options to chose from.

I don't believe that Drupal/ Ubercart are recognizing the uc_shipping module is there.

Has anyone else experienced this (or similar) problem and some pointers on how to fix it?
