The description for the menu items is currently the full description of the term. For some uses, that is fine, for others not so much.
In some ways this could be considered a bug (5000 word title attribute on a whole bunch of menu items is a waste of bandwidth, etc. also looks a bit silly and I *believe* (untested) that that will play a bit of havok with screen readers).
In some ways it could be considered a feature request; either way, definitely needed for my current project.

Patch:
provides three options on a per menu basis:
- No description (default for new menus)
- Short description (120 chars...)
- Full description (current state and default for old menus)

This appears to be partially addressed in the issue that @sascher shared. We now have the option to choose if we want a description or not and could change the field we want to use as the description. I know this issue in particular was regarding setting a certain length on the description itself, but couldn't we just manually change the actual description on the terms to match the length we'd prefer? Or what would a particular use case be that would need a length option on the description? Just seems like we could manually go in and modify our descriptions if we're using the description field as the description. (I don't think I said description enough times =) )
