When I set multiple recipients in contact module, SMTP seems to take those and apply them all as "From". A from, as seen in my admin error log, looks this:

Error sending email: The following From address failed: webmaster@mydomain.com,other_recipient@mydomain.com From: webmaster@mydomain.com,other_recipient@mydomain.com To: thesender@mydomain.com

Removing the extra recipient (leaving just one) works as expected.

This is appears to be a contact.module issue, not smtp.
Sorry for the clutter-- I've closed the issue.
