i've had a problem with the 1.4 and 1.5 versions of Simplemenu and the latest version of jQuery Update - http://drupal.org/node/779956. not sure which is creating the problem, so this issue may be in the wrong place.
v 1.4 and 1.5 both appear to work fine with jquery update 1.1, but neither works with the alpha. the sm menu disappears and when i try to access the settings page, the 2 settings fieldsets are not accessible. the heading are printed, but they aren't live and won't open.
since i need the latest jQuery that only comes with the alpha for another module, i tried several times to install and remove the different versions. i did note the recent progress on the nice menus / simplemenu conflict that i may have seen earlier in another thread i posted (http://drupal.org/node/617602) and made the updates there to ensure both modules are using the same js version. i'm sure that's a good thing to do, so thanks for that. but it didn't help solve this problem.
i'm not sure if i should also post in the jQuery queue or how these things are handled.
thank you.

AlexisWilke commentedHi John,
I'm using 2.x-dev which is the same as 2.0-alpha1.
I'm thinking that yet another module you are using causes the problem. It could also be that other module you are mentioning but not telling what it is... 8-)
Would it work the other way around? i.e. by uninstalling (disabling at least) that other module and run only SimpleMenu?
Thank you.

john.kenney commentedah, that's interesting to hear that they work for you.
i didn't mean to be mysterious about that other module. :)
i never actually installed it because the newer jQuery version was required and it was pointless to try anything before that was working. for the record, the other module is http://drupal.org/project/views_nivo_slider
so the only 2 modules i was playing with were simplemenu and jQuery update. there were no other module changes happening concurrently. i was simply switching back and forth the different versions and seeing simplemenu go dark.
it could be that yet some other module is the true source of the problem, but i have no idea how to go about diagnosing that. i have many modules on my sites and i'm not that technical.
for the time being its probably not worth chasing down. i found an alternative to views nivo slider that works with jQuery 1.1. nivo slider looks even more slick, but i can live without it.
thanks for the follow up.

AlexisWilke commentedJohn,
I tried again, although I did not see anything appearing for Views Visio... where is that hidden?? I checked in the views and the different Admin menus, nothing... Hmmm...
In any event, I installed jQuery Update (2.x-dev) on a test site with Views Visio (and thus Image API, ImageCache and Transliteration!) I created a couple pages, and I still cannot see how that new module helps, but for sure I still have the SimpleMenu working just fine...
Hmmm...
At least, that helped me find another bug (i.e. with the to_do module, but not directly related to this issue I'm afraid.)

john.kenney commentedHi Alexis:
Just to be clear: I never installed Views Nivo module myself because I couldn't get jQuery Update alpha to play nice with Simplemenu. Since Views Nivo doesn't work without the alpha, there was no point in proceeding.
For me, the act of installing the alpha is what broke Simplemenu - both 1.4/1.5. Since I really like Simplemenu, I wasn't prepared to move forward with Views Nivo.
It sounds like it all works fine for you, so that's encouraging. Perhaps I'll give it a shot again at some point.
