After installing the the latest security update (7.x-2.3) I have found that none of the settings I enter in the configuration section will save. This therefore leaves the module unusable for me. When reverting back to 7.x-2.2 the module works perfectly fine.

Yes you have right. I have the same problem.

Its really simple in the submit handler are changed in wrong values.

before update :

$form_state['input']['...']

after update :

$form_state['values']['...']

The new changed have the result that save the old settings and not the
setting that we changed.

I dont know why this was changed but that was wrong.
