Override scheduled close date with permission

I would love an additional permission that would allow a user to register for events after they have been closed by the scheduled end date function.

Use case: Event is open for public registration until a day before. After that, they don't want public registrations as they are concerned about getting surprised by a big class. However, if they get a phone call and a staff person is there, the admin should not be hampered by the close date.

Might do this myself if I have the chance, but thought I'd check to see if it has been done. Seems like other might like this feature.
