Create a Drupal 8 version of Menu Item Fields.
Since Menu Item's are content entities in Drupal 8, it should be somewhat trivial to make menu links fieldable in Drupal 8.

davidwbarratt commentedPerhaps this is a valid alternative?

leon kessler commentedThere's also an approach here http://drupal.stackexchange.com/a/220463 which describes how to add fields to menu items (although it doesn't expose menu items to the field UI).
leon kessler commented@davidwbarratt would be interested to know a bit more about the limitations of the core menu system (that led to the creation of colossal_menu).
I.e. what more do you need to do than just add fields to menu items?
davidwbarratt commentedEasier to add fields and expose the menu with REST (https://www.drupal.org/project/rest_menu_tree), plus the core menu link items do not have bundles, so having multiple link types solved our use case.
davidwbarratt commentedHonestly I wasn't sure what was going to be more difficult, modify the core menu system (with a module like this one) or just build a new menu system. The latter appeared to be less problematic.

volegerTake a look at
https://www.drupal.org/project/menu_item_extras
This module extends core menu_link_content entity. It allows using fields as fields in nodes.
