okay, this came up in a related general discussion - idea for feature: user may set max upload to 2megs, but a new imagecache action will "prescale" the image before stored and before imagecache presets and derivatives are generated - this action will reduce the "original image" to a new reduced scale, like a highly optimized jpg with max size specified by admin

example: a typical community news site, people snap pics with their cameras and instead of frustrating them, i'd like them to be able to upload a file up to 8megs (typical res for a digital cam high quality pic) - BUT when they click to upload, or save (not sure when it would happen), the image original is automagically rescaled to my admin defined max file store size for the main pic (e.g. 800k or 500k) and from there the imagecache presets are applied for generation throughout the site.

in turn, that original 'huge' file is never actually saved on the server, only the prescaled version is saved (at 800k for example) reducing the potential to cripple a drupal hosting provider max storage limits and also offering the users the feeling that they can upload infinitely huge pictures...

thoughts?

the module that is accepting the uploads should constrain the size. if you're using image field you'll see that it has a sizing option to do exactly this.
