I'm having a problem that seems to crop up a lot with ImageCache, but so far none of the solutions in the forums seem to fix it.

I have a site developed on my local machine, everything works great. ImageCache is awesome, it creates all its sub-directories and image files for each preset just fine.

When I upload the site to our server, ImageCache completely stops working even though everything else works fine. I have set all the permissions on the files, temp and imagecache directories to be 777.

I have checked the htaccess files to make sure they are the same as those in the troubleshooting guide and it all matches up. I have also uninstalled ImageCache, flushed the drupal cache, reinstalled ImageCache and rebuilt all the presets, but nothing happens.

The main imagecache folder is created in the files directory, but no subdirectories or or new image files are ever created. ImageCache is generating the correct URLs, because if I set the display type to "

URL", it shows what would be the correct path if the subdirectories actually existed. It seems that this must be some error in my server settings, since everthing worked fine on the localhost, but I have been going absolutely mental trying to figure it out. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on, any other settings I could look at besides the .htaccess files? I am using Apache.

I had the same problem. ImageCache worked great on my local installation but stopped working after uploading to the server.
Check if there is an ImageCache error in the status repot ("ImageCache Temp Directory c:/xampp/tmp is not write able by ...")
If this is the case: changed the temporary directory to tmp or to any directory you like in - Administer » Site configuration » File system.
After doing that ImageCache is working great again.

thanks for the reply

i tried your suggestion, but unfortuneately to no avail.

i've narrowed it down to having something to do with uploading the entire site from the local machine; it must be something to do with permissions or some config file that i don't know about.

i found that if i wipe everything and then install drupal via the normal installation process on the remote server and recreate all my content and settings then imagecache works like a charm.

so it seems like i'll just have to recreate everything on the remote machine; luckily i'm fairly early on in the developement process so it's not too arduous.

this problem seems to be endemic to imagecache though, and the solutions that work for everybody seem to be almost totally different on a case-by-case basis.

i just don't know enough about how different server settings can affect imagecache; there might be a very lucrative business here for some apache wiz helping out imagecache-hamstrung designer developers :)

it would be great if we could all figure out a way to more thoroughly document how to solve these issues or patch in some util that could check vital server settings and let you know what was different from one installation to another . . .
