Imagecache displays a broken link if no image is uploaded

I've read post relating to this all over and can't find anything to solve it. I tried this patch and it did nothing http://drupal.org/node/260669. On a normal node created by a CCK(5.x-1.7) node type with the ImageField(5.x-2.1) not required, if there is no image imagecache(5.x-2.1) just displays a incomplete URL tag. I've tried using my own node type template with this code print theme('imagecache', 'midsize', substr($field_image_logo[0]['filepath'], 6)); and it does the same thing, tried to figure out some if statement but nothing seems to work. Any thoughts suggestions? I'm on Drupal 5.10.
