aspilicious commentedYou need to look at responsive image solutions, like the picture module. It's better to ask those questions at drupal.stackexchange.com more people will help you there.

aaronmarsh632 commentedHi thanks for your reply, I'll have a look at responsive image solutions. just another thought I had, would it be possible - via a module to have multiple display suite views for 1 content type? so a different display will be shown based on the users screen resolution?
Comment #3
aspilicious commentedThat's not really possible as switching screen size doesn't trigger a node rebuild.
So yeah, not an option :)

aaronmarsh632 commentedOk thanks for the advice, Just 1 more question to extend on this, how about mobile devices? is there a way to allow drupal to automatically switch to another theme if on a mobile device?
Thanks

aspilicious commented2 options:
1) Create a responsive website ==> no you can't switch themes
2) Create a mobile website ==> m.site.com ==> different theme
So it's possible, all depends on the use case and the situation.

aaronmarsh632 commentedok thanks for the sugestions, If I created a mobile version on a sub domain could I use the same database for both sites? so the user can use both desktop & mobile versions with same account & content will be the same etc? If so this may be the best option
Thanks

aspilicious commentedIt's not THAT easy, because the theme stuff it self is also saved i the database and that needs to be shared. For authentication you need to look at single sign on systems for content some kind of sync or a central data api.
As you can see developing for mobile isn't that easy. That's why most people look at responsive solutions/images because that gives a mobile site with less efforts/costs.
