Is there a way to insert an empty span tag in a div element? For example...

You can't do that in the UI. You can only achieve this with creating your own field in code with the tags written into it.
If you're comfortable with writing custom code I would look at http://drupalcontrib.org/api/drupal/contributions!ds!ds.api.php/function...
