During the Drupalcon Chicago Docsprint, the Upgrade Guide for Drupal 7 was reviewed (see: http://drupal.org/node/536854)

While reviewing, we also worked on a reorganization of the complete Upgrade section (http://drupal.org/upgrade), but we did not have time to fix everything. Three general issues could still be worked on:

  1. After 'Upgrading from Drupal 5 to 6', a new section could be added about the steps after the upgrade process. This could contain:
  2. Review the 'Before you Begin' section
  3. Clean up the http://drupal.org/node/635460. This section contains quite some redundant pages, including:

Hi, I have done a few modifications to the Before you begin section.
However, I see now that most of this information is already covered in the section about upgrading from Drupal 6 to 7. And so I found this issue :-)

So I am thinking about which of these two methods would be the best approach for organizing the Upgrade guide:

  • Remove all redundant information outside Upgrading from Drupal 6 to 7, and merge any content which is still relevant into the Drupal 6>7 section
  • Move all general information out of the Drupal 6>7 and 5>6 sections, and only keep version specific information here.

Also I am not sure what is the best practice for tagging pages about upgrades between two versions: both versions or only the "to"-version (D7 in most cases). Currently there is some inconsistency.

Thinking more about this, I suggest putting all general information outside the version specific upgrade guides. This will avoid duplicated pages and make it easier to maintain.
